Collection Headers: What They Are & How to Use Them
The collection header is the small header that appears above a section's photos — separate from your gallery's main cover. It's an easy way to make a multi-section gallery feel organized and intentional instead of just one long scroll of photos.
What is a collection header?
Every section in your gallery (each Collection or Featured Video) can show a header right above its content — the section's name, styled according to whichever option you pick. It's different from your gallery's cover/banner, which only appears once at the very top of the whole gallery. A collection header repeats for every section, marking where one ends and the next begins.
The five styles
Text Center — the section name, centered above the photo grid
Text Left — the section name, left-aligned above the photo grid
Image Small Center — a small representative photo centered above the section, with the name alongside or below it
Text Overlay — the section name overlaid directly on a photo, banner-style
Why use one
A few reasons collection headers are worth turning on:
Navigation — clients scrolling through a gallery with several sections (Ceremony, Reception, Portraits...) can immediately tell where they are
Pacing — a header creates a visual pause between sections, so the gallery doesn't read as one undifferentiated wall of photos
Context — a named header sets expectations before the client scrolls into a new part of the story
Polish — it signals the gallery was designed with care, not just uploaded and left as a flat grid
Choosing the best style for your gallery
There's no single right answer — it depends on the gallery — but a few guidelines help:
If a gallery only has one or two sections, Text Center usually looks cleaner than adding headers that barely get used
For galleries with several sections, Text Left or Text Center gives clear, unobtrusive orientation without competing with the photos
Image Small Center works well when a section has one standout photo that represents it well — it doubles as a mini-preview
Text Overlay gives the most editorial, magazine-like feel, but only works if the photo behind the text has enough contrast for the text to stay readable — pair it with a stronger Overlay intensity setting if the photo is busy or light
Keep the same header style across all sections in a gallery for a cohesive look — mixing styles section to section usually reads as inconsistent rather than intentional
Match the header style to your cover template's mood: Editorial/Magazine-style covers pair naturally with Text Overlay headers, while Classic or Minimal covers usually pair better with Text Center or None
Not sure which to pick? Start with Text Center — it's the safest, most universally readable option — then try Text Overlay if you want a bolder, more editorial feel once you've seen how the gallery looks with real photos.
